Itinerary

You can visit Atacama, the driest desert on Earth, at any time of year. In summer the days turn scorching, while the altitude keeps the nights cool and steady. The Altiplanic winter brings afternoon downpours and frequent electrical storms, with heavy rain possible in January and February and snow falling in July and August. We handle the logistics for you: help at the local airport, the car rental and your accommodations. With everything booked in advance, you're free to focus on the driving and the views. NOTES: Chile's geography gives it every climate on the planet, and its four seasons are clearly marked. The warmest months run from October to April, and the coldest from May to September. REQUIREMENTS Drivers must be at least 25 years old. Each driver needs a valid driving licence and passport. (You don't need an international permit to drive in Chile.) A major credit card in the renter's name is required (MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club or American Express). IMPORTANT NOTE: given the times we're living through, this trip can be shaped around your budget and particular needs. There are no fixed departures and no minimum length, and you can start and finish on whatever dates work for you. Just tell us what you'd like, and we'll put together a fully tailored holiday. Thanks and take care!

Collect your rental car at Calama Airport, then drive roughly 101 km to San Pedro de Atacama. In the afternoon, make your way out to Moon Valley and walk among the rock and sand shapes that wind and water have sculpted over thousands of years. The colours and textures here really do resemble the lunar surface. Night in San Pedro de Atacama.

Today is yours to explore at your own pace. One idea is the hour-long drive to Los Flamencos National Reserve, where deep blue lagoons draw flamingos and plenty of other birds. Alternatively, head for the Atacama Salt Flat, the largest in Chile, ringed by striking volcanoes and crusts of salt. Take enough food and water for whichever route you pick. A second night in San Pedro de Atacama.

Another open day, with up to about 240 km of driving if you want to use it. You might revisit Los Flamencos National Reserve and the Atacama Salt Flat, or go somewhere new such as the Altiplanic Lagoons. Returning along Route 23, watch for the Tropic of Capricorn markers and an old Incan trail flagged by a white cross. Carry plenty of food and water. Overnight again in San Pedro de Atacama.

It's not a desert like any other with simple sand, but it's something else. I was very happy to have done this tour, where I could get to know a magnificent place, especially that I had the car to move with my times and not depend on anyone.

That it is Sel drive is like the strawberry of the dessert, since it allows the time that it does not want itself, and it does not depend on anybody, it gives you complete independence. The car was very comfortable, did not consume much fuel. The hotel food, was mafnifica. They will be able to know magnificent places, do not hesitate to do.

Excellent! I had never visited this region of Chile before and neither had I done it through a package. But the truth is that it was a unique and fun experience. We had a great time, and the highlight is that by having a self-drive car, everyone can tour and do things at their own time. The hotel is very nice and comfortable. Next trip I will definitely hire Signature Tours to put it together for me. Thank you very much.

I had never been in a desert before. The first word that comes to mind is incredible. I wish everyone could ever know a place as beautiful as that. Thanks Signature Tours for this trip... See you the next time.
