What to expect in Svalbard
-
The real High Arctic
Svalbard sits around 78° north. Glaciers calve into the sea, reindeer graze on the tundra and the sun doesn't set for months in summer. It feels like the edge of the map — because it almost is.
-
Polar bear country
There are more polar bears than people in parts of Svalbard. Landings are always accompanied by trained, armed guides, and strict rules keep both animals and travelers safe.
-
Longyearbyen, the world's northernmost town
Your expedition usually starts and ends in Longyearbyen, a small town with a surprising number of cafés, a fine museum and the famous seed vault on the hillside.
-
Plans that follow the ice
Every route depends on sea-ice and weather conditions. The expedition team adapts daily, which means no two voyages are ever the same.
Your Svalbard tour questions, answered
- When is the best time to visit Svalbard?
For expedition cruises, May to September. Late spring still has lots of sea ice and snow, mid-summer brings 24-hour daylight and seabirds, and late August into September offers more open water and the first dark nights.
- Will I see polar bears in Svalbard?
There's a good chance on a multi-day expedition, especially along the sea-ice edge, but sightings are never guaranteed. Bears are always watched from a respectful distance.
- How do I get to Svalbard?
Flights to Longyearbyen leave from mainland Norway, mainly Oslo and Tromsø. Because you pass through Norway, you need to meet Norwegian (Schengen) entry requirements on the way.
- How cold is Svalbard in summer?
Summer temperatures are usually just above freezing, around 0 to 7 °C, with wind chill on the water. Dress in layers with waterproof outerwear.
- Can I leave Longyearbyen on my own?
Outside the settlement there is a real risk of encountering polar bears, so travelers should only go out with a qualified guide. Expeditions take care of this for every landing.
