In Alaska, the summer sun barely sets, and with 20-plus hours of daylight even the produce grows large (the Matanuska Valley is known for its 70-pound cabbages). Over 10 days you’ll travel from coast to mountains, cruising past the 3-mile face of the Columbia Glacier and watching tidewater glaciers calve in Kenai Fjords National Park. You’ll ride the Alaska Railroad into Denali National Park, home to North America’s highest peak, pan for gold at Fairbanks’ Gold Dredge #8, and watch a mushing demonstration at the home of an Iditarod champion. Along the way you may spot whales, caribou, moose or grizzlies. Locals shrug at such sightings; we think you’ll find this a big trip.
